Viola can afford to wait another 29 yrs! & just becos Meryl is 'legendary' doesnt mean we should expect the more of her every time. This IS the time to award the legend!

Lots of great info - an interesting mix of the sentimental and the new guard. Who would have thought that Woody Allen, Terrence Malick, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg would all be competing in major categories in the same year in this decade?

Hi Scott - love your treatment of the race this year - most illuminating. Your comment that most resonates about this whole funny game that is the Oscar race, is that perception is often reality - people get themselves in all sorts of knots bemoaning who is most deserving, but as the season rolls along, the picture gets clearer, as each award show unfolds and the sense of where the pulse actually is, has often very little to do with the supposed 'best'. Sandra Bullock's win is such an example, and to some extent Jeff Bridges, where an actor gives a good but not great performance, but is either due, or the sentiment is with them. So too with The King's Speech and Tom Hooper. There still seems to be a swell around the Help and The Artist - not sure about Lead Actor and Actress - is Clooney the only sure thing? Meryl -v- Viola is shaping up as a fascinating one. My sense is this year will be a sentimental one - Plummer, Streep, Woody, Scorsese. But is it only the mid point. I will follow your analysys most vigilantly. Cheeers!!
