‘Spectre’: 007 at the Oscars

By Patrick Shanley
Managing Editor

Over the weekend, Spectre, the fourth James Bond film in the Daniel Craig era of the legendary spy franchise, earned the top spot at the box office with a $70 million bow, making it the second highest grossing film in the series just behind 2012’s Skyfall (which earned $88 million in its opening weekend).

Despite its success with audiences, the Spectre has been less well received by critics, with a 63% on review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes (by contrast, Skyfall holds a 93%). Yet, the film may still earn nominations from the Academy, as many previous Bond films have done. In fact, eight of the 23 films in the franchise that has spanned the course of five decades.

Here’s a look back at how previous 007 films have fared with Oscar and what that history may mean for Spectre:

The Top 10 Songs Ever Performed On ‘Glee’

By Carson Blackwelder
Television Contributor

Fox’s hit dramedy Glee returns tomorrow after its long winter hiatus.

After combing through the archives, I’ve chosen the 10 best covers throughout the show’s four-season run.

One of Glee’s best attributes is its ability to put a story with a song, giving it more power than a radio can. If a song gets the appropriate arrangement, a compelling back story and powerful pipes, the combination can be overwhelming and memorable.

Take a look — and a listen — to the top 10 best Glee songs ever. Consider this your essential Glee playlist:

The Biggest Factors To Look Forward To At The 2013 Golden Globes

By Joey Magidson
Film Contributor

Aside from the Academy Awards, no ceremony has as much pomp and circumstance to it each year than the Golden Globe Awards. While the Golden Globes don’t have the same cultural legacy that the Oscars do, the former is definitely an event that affects the latter at times. Most years, the influence on Oscar is there, but it’s minimal. This year, however, we could be looking at a time when Oscar voters are looking to the Globes more than ever before.

The reason for this added interest is the new timeframe for Academy members to vote. Usually there’s more distance between the Globe nominations and the Oscar nominations, which is not the case here. This makes the Globes a show to look forward to more than is usual.

I’m not going to outright list the things to most look forward to with the Golden Globes this year, but there are a lot, and they don’t all have to do with the Oscar race. One can see what the Hollywood Foreign Press does this year and enjoy it independently of what eventually goes down with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. There will be simple pleasures on display for all awards show and movie fans to enjoy.

LIVE BLOG: ‘Glee’ Season 4 Premiere

By Carson Blackwelder
Television Contributor

FINAL THOUGHTS: Coming from someone who hasn’t really enjoyed the last two seasons of Glee, I thought the season 4 premiere was extremely strong.

Everything from the music (wasn’t the biggest fan of “Americano/Dance Again”) and the storylines are right on spot so far.

The introduction of Marley and her cafeteria mom is a breath of fresh air for the show and is a rather timely storyline. And Marley stuns in her performances as well (as does Jake). I couldn’t be more excited for a character on this show than I am for her.

Rachel and Kurt have reunited (making my Kurt and Rachel Show dreams come true) and I’m looking forward to them taking NYC by storm together.

I was surprised to see many of the graduates missing from the premiere, but with the addition of new characters, it makes sense. The graduates, save for Rachel and Kurt, are probably going to be more secondary characters than anything. Let’s hope that keeping up with everyone doesn’t detract from the start in the right direction it looks like the show is headed.

And the Grammy Goes to ….

By Samuel Negin

The Grammy Awards were held last night and, while I didn’t stay up late enough to watch the show, there are a few notable results.  Adele went home with six awards last night (Best Short Form Music Video, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep”, Album of the Year and Pop Album of the Year for 21, and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Someone Like You”) and Bon Iver took home the award for Best New Artist.

Grammys are Finally Doing it Right!

By Roger Friedman

Forget the nominees. This year, the Grammys are finally doing it right. It’s a celebration of the world of music. They’ve just announced a Beach Boys reunion with Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Mike Love. Add to that performances from Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. That would be enough. Dayenu! But of course Adele is performing, and so are hot new groups like Foster the People, The Civil Wars, and (less newish) Maroon 5.
