How ‘La La Land’ Brought to Life That Crazy Party Sequence (Exclusive Video)

By: Scott Feinberg
The Hollywood Reporter

One of the most memorable sequences in Damien Chazelle‘s La La Land, the original musical that scored a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations last month, is the somewhat surreal, Gatsby-esque “Someone in the Crowd” party sequence that comes early in the film and displays a remarkable combination of beautiful choreography, production design, cinematography, film editing and music.

La La Land has officially earned a spot in the history books by tying the record for the most Oscar nominations ever — but just how many of those 14 chances will it see a win? This critical darling is widely considered to take home best picture come February 26, which would make it just the 11th musical to do so, so let’s examine how it stands in the other categories by doing a deep dive into the track records of the 10 musicals that took home top honors before it.

“It was an experience of collaboration like I’d never had before,” says the actress Emma Stone of the making of La La Land as we sit down at Santa Barbara’s Biltmore Hotel to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. The 28-year-old won the best actress SAG Award and is nominated for the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Mia, a struggling young actress in love with Ryan Gosling‘s struggling young musician Sebastian, in Damien Chazelle‘s original musical — one of a record-tying 14 nominations bestowed upon it by the Academy — which hits home for her as much as anyone. “I do understand a lot of what Mia’s going through,” she says, noting that reading Chazelle’s script for the first time both “lifted me up and broke my heart.”

Not only is La La Land breaking records as the most-nominated musical in Oscar history but that haul of 14 nominations for its lead pair, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Musicals don’t often get that much love from the Academy Awards and getting recognition in both the best actor and best actress categories is even rarer. Let’s take a look back at the history of this happening and see how Stone and Gosling’s nominations — and potential wins — are important.

When I ran into La La Land‘s 32-year-old director Damien Chazelle at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Friday, I told him that I’d like to start calling him “Skippy” since, as he well knows, he is poised to become the youngest best director Oscar winner ever at the 89th Academy Awards on Feb. 26, breaking a record held for the last 85 years by one Norman Taurog for his direction of a 1931 film called — you guessed it — Skippy.

Science wasn’t specifically discussed on Friday night when the Santa Barbara International Film Festival honored both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the stars of Damien Chazelle‘s original musical La La Land, with its Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, but anyone watching the dynamic duo on screen or, it turns out, in person, inevitably winds up pondering the same thing: the magic and mystery of sheer chemistry.

La La Land had a big night on Saturday at the 28th PGA Awards, where it won the top prize, and everyone knew, even then, that some other film was going to have its big night on Sunday at the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards. That’s because La La Land was not nominated for the best ensemble SAG Award, the closest thing that SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, has to a best picture award.

Producers Guild Awards: The Oscar Implications of the ‘La La Land’ Win

By winning the the highest honor at the 28th annual PGA Awards on Saturday night, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, La La Land, a critically and commercially successful original musical about struggling artists in Hollywood, further solidified its status as the clear favorite to win the best picture Oscar. Not every past winner of the PGA’s top prize has gone on to claim the Academy’s top prize — just last year, The Big Short won the PGA Ward, but Spotlight won the Oscar. However, 19 of its 27 prior recipients did, and there is plenty of reason to believe that isn’t purely coincidental.

Damien Chazelle, the 32-year-old wunderkind who wrote and directed the original musical La La Land, was in Beijing this morning — or this evening, local time — when he learned that his film had tied the all-time record for most Oscar nominations for a single film with 14: best picture, best director (Chazelle), best actor (Ryan Gosling), best actress (Emma Stone), best original screenplay (Chazelle), best cinematography, best costume design, best film editing, best original score, best original song (both “Audition” and “City of Stars”), best production design, best sound editing and best sound mixing.

It’s beginning to look like La La Land is going to sweep the entire awards season all the way through the Oscars — and to make history in the process. The L.A.-set musical that is chock full of Hollywood magic has been dominating every major awards show thus far and is poised to tie the record for garnering the most Oscar nominations — and potentially wins — for a film ever.
